Our Philosophy

We are building a community of awareness, health, acceptance, equanimity, happiness, and love through the practice of yoga, meditation, and service.

Our classes are free of charge, but we encourage people to donate what they can to a cause.
We have donation cups for Middleway House, The Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, and maintenance and upkeep of Maxwell House Yoga. You may also donate non-perishable food or other sundry items for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.

Thank you!

Our Teachers

Winnie (Ana Shakti) is the co-founder and master teacher of Maxwell House Yoga. With over 40 years’ experience studying, practicing, and teaching yoga around the world, anyone that has the opportunity to practice with her is in for a treat! Through her customized gentle warm-up series that articulates nearly every joint of the human body, Winnie develops student confidence to move into beginning and advanced yoga asana. She lovingly guides the class through breathing techniques and leads yoga nidra (psychic sleep) that will prepare you for your day.

Amity  teaches an inclusive compassionate and joyful class. Bringing many lineages together she’s motivated to facilitate injury prevention and optimal healing.

Fifi aka Fileve (Shakti), is an energetic spirit with a passion for yogasana and teaching.  Originally from NYC she enjoys the physical attributes of Hatha Yoga, the mind calming effects of pranayama (breath work), and the feelings of joy that carry through the day.  She has been practicing on and off since 1992. Fifi strives to challenge and expand her students, always with a touch of laughter in each class!

Hannah Edgerton Matamoros (Bhakti) is the co-founder of Maxwell House Yoga. She has been practicing yoga since age 5 when she started attending yoga classes at Swami Brahmavidyananda Saraswati’s yoga ashram in the Dominican Republic. Since then Hannah and her mom Winnie (Ana Shakti) have continued to practice and teach yoga together. Hannah has over 33 years’ experience studying and teaching Hatha yoga around the world. Hannah currently lives and teaches yoga in Guatemala, where she offers beginning, intermediate and advanced yoga classes. Hannah is certified to train and certify aspiring yoga teachers.

In her classes, Hannah gently guides her students through a series of physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation techniques (yoga nidra) that allow practitioners to become empowered physically and emotionally, discover deeper layers of consciousness and enjoy better health and overall well-being.

Joe (Sadashiva), has been practicing yoga for six years. He has been drawn to yoga for its positive holistic attributes, its philosophical leanings, and the community it creates. Joe practices daily and loves to share with others.

Kathy (Karuna Devi) is another original MH practioner, student, and teacher. She is also the owner and resident of the house itself.  As a public school music teacher she has taught music at all age levels for decades.   Kathy developed a loving yoga teaching style that will brighten your day. Although currently only substituting her presence is a warm welcome to all visitors, students, teachers, and practitioners.

Lauretta  (Durga Devi) has been practicing yoga for over 15 years.  She was first introduced to yoga in 1997 as way to reduce stress and help with relaxation.   After her first class she was hooked.   As a nurse for over 30 years, she has always been an advocate for a healthy lifestyle.  She believes maintaining balance in one’s life, with good nutrition, exercise, and nurturing ones spirit is key to obtaining good health. Lauretta feels yoga has been a major influence in helping her to achieve this balance in her own life and loves sharing this with others.  She has a daily practice of pranayama, meditation and asana.

Robin (Guru Aruba) is one of the original student/teachers of MH Yoga. Whether practicing yoga or meditation, leading classes, or engaging in deep philosophical conversation, Robin exudes a gentle presence that comes through her teaching.  She cultivates a sense of peace as she guides her students through the warm-up and asana with meticulous instruction. Through yoga Robin gains a deeper sense of self as an artist and is able to use her yogic interpersonal skills as real estate agent.

Sarah (Prem Jyoti), is another original student and natural born teacher. She has been practicing yoga for over a decade and flourished in the Maxwell House environment. Her gentle instructions will lead you through a relaxing yet invigorating asana series. As a vocal coach, and guitar instructor too, Sarah flows through her yoga classes with a focus on the breath while moving to the natural rhythms of your body.

Karen (Aditi Bha) an original teacher of Maxwell House yoga.  You will always appreciate a class with Karen’s gentle and loving instruction. Her deep knowledge and experience of our text and practice gives you a thorough experience of integration.

Lela (Valeria), has been a teacher all her adult life but it has been a new and wonderful experience to teach yoga at Maxwell House. She started practicing yoga in 1984 just after the birth of her first daughter, and for many years she practiced yoga alone at home. In 2008, she was introduced to Maxwell House where she found guidance, love, and a happy community of people that believe in practicing yoga together. In addition to undergraduate level training in yoga, Pilates ball and water exercise from IU, Lela is currently completing the Maxwell House Yoga Teacher Advanced Certificate, Lela’s classes include a gentle warm up followed by a sequence of physical postures (asanas), and breathing exercises (pranayama). The last 20 minutes of class to are dedicated to a deep relaxation technique called yoga nidra (psychic sleep).

Maxwellhouse is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
